The term WWJD or What Would Jesus Do became very popular a few years ago, and it has become a mantra for many people. For many people it is a personal motto or reminder to themselves, a reminder to "try" to do the "right thing". Commendable I guess. But can one ever attempt to imitate Jesus Christ? And if so, how?
All too often people simply mimic the teachings and behavioral expectations of their religious institution and background. They believe that their outward displays of "religious teaching" will please God, please their religious entourage, and somehow change them into a "better person" - hmmm?
What Would Jesus Do?
Would Jesus pray for them man who cut him off in traffic? Would Jesus pay for the meal of a homeless person, or tell him to go get a job? Would Jesus? Would Jesus?
Too many times we see that our "following Jesus" is really just following man-made rules, beliefs, laws, and traditions - so, our "WWJD" is based solely upon what we "think" he would do. which is based solely on what we have been taught about Him, as our God. Therefore, we label SIN and even HOLINESS according to what we have been taught by our religious institutions and tradition, instead of what the word of God and His Spirit reveals. We try to live out "holiness" by being a better person, by living out a set of spoken and unspoken rules. and even this attempt my friend is sin consciousness at it's worst!
Shocked? It should shock you. It is how 99.99% of Christian churches teach their own method of holiness or WWJD - and it is a hard stronghold to break once it has been driven into you by years or even decades of religious repetition. Even after the revelation I am sharing in this letter to you, I still battle with the sin-consciousness that was taught, is being taught, and will probably continue to be taught under the banner of religion.
So exactly What Would Jesus Do?
Well, as simple as it sounds - he would do what he saw the Father doing, and he would simply be himself - Jesus! How does that help us? Well, the real secret of WWJD is held in the writings of the Apostle Paul. In his writing to the church at Corinth we see that the key, the secret - is to become "as Christ - in His image", and this is not done by our legalistic workings. This work is completed as we "behold the Glory - behold Christ Jesus".
2 Corinthians 3:18 tells us:
"So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord - who is the Spirit - makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image." - NLT
"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord." - NKJV
Check out how The Message states it:
"All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. And so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become more like him."
Read this very closely and very slowly - then read it again.. You are TRANSFORMED, and being transformed Into HIS IMAGE, the image of the Lord - by the very Spirit of God - behold Christ, behold the Glory, and you become more like Christ!
As you find yourself transforming you will no longer have to worry if something is right or wrong, because as you become more in his image, you will stop tasting of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. You will no longer have to attempt holiness, as the true Holy one is changing and transforming you day-by-day, glory-to-glory. WWJD? He would behold the glory, behold his Father, and literally change the world!
What will YOU do? I urge you to lay aside religious prejudices and traditions, and behold the glory of the Lord so it can reflect to a world full of darkness.
